April Zoomie topic change...4/10/26, noon-2pm EDT (GMT-4)

There has been a change of plan regarding the April Zoomie. The Bendix Data Recorder presentation will be happening at a time TBD later in the year. Instead, I will be presenting "So You Have a Motorcycle Crash. Now What?" A primer on handling a motorcycle crash scene. It will be offered at the same time slot originally assigned to this BDR-presentation. Please visit the NAPARS page to sign up if you'd like to attend. The BDR-registration will NOT carry over automatically.

I have emailed those who paid to attend to offer refunds.

We are submitting a request for ACTAR CEUs.

I apologize for any disruption or inconvenience this change may cause.

Peace. -W

ARJ Index in Reference Library updated

Some time back, I assembled a database of all the articles which have appeared in ARJ & AIQ and a few other places. It includes titles, authors, keywords, my subjective value assessment, and sometimes a little description of what the article contains. Andy Rich was kind enough to provide the programming script to search by either author or keywords. I have updated the list to include the latest ARJ (#200). The Excel file is in the Reference Library. Peace. -W

AnalyzerPro has just offered NAPARS members a 30% discount (50€ or about $54) on their 1-2 hour seminars coming up in May (3D Photogrammetry with Agisoft, offered twice) and April (Basic recon with AnalyzerPro, offered 4 times) Both courses will be held online via Zoom. https://analyzer.at/en/seminare/ AnalyzerPro is a fairly comprehensive package for crash analysis that has been around for decades, mostly in Europe. They are looking to expand in the US market. I will probably take them up on at least one of them just to stay informed of what's out there. The classes are listed in the NAPARS website event page, but registration is at their website.

In the past week the developer has added the ability to enter a alpha-numeric code as a backup. This option will be used if the QR-code fails, which has apparently suddenly become an issue. In order to minimize problems on Friday during the show, and maximize our presenter's time, please check now that when you open it up on your phone, it has a button to "SCAN QR CODE" and also a button to "ENTER PIN" (like the second screenshot below). My version apparently updated itself already - since when I checked the App-store earlier this afternoon, there was nothing for me to update, and I have this newer version already.

"Ignition Cycology" Zoomie recording in Reference Library

The video and slide show from the 05/05/2023 two-hour presentation by Kent Boots on ignition cycle count in EDRs and how to use it has been uploaded to the Reference Library. He also sent a copy of the federal rule regarding EDRs, an Excel file for estimating dates from ignition cycles, and a page of different scan tools (which he talked about more extensively in his WREX presentation, but which was a bit of a topic of discussion during this show as well). Thanks, Kent!

ACTAR approved our slightly delinquent application in record time, so members who attend the 04 April Zoom presentation on Human Factors will have the chance to sign up for 2 CEUs from ACTAR. Thanks, ACTAR! If you are accredited, and want the ceus, be sure you have the correct i-Attend app on your phone beforehand. There won't be time to load it up when we show the QR code during the show. More details on the process are here: https://actar.org/ceu/earning

09 JAN 2023 Zoomie good for 2 ACTAR CEUs

January's 2-hour zoom show has been approved by ACTAR for 2 CEUs. This show will be free for NAPARS members, and just $5 for non-members. I'll be discussing a case study involving an EDR file that initially seemed to disagree with physics...But EDRs are fabulously reliable...What happened? Could it be that the module failed? Can we trust these things? Could it be alien beings interfering with the electronics? We'll talk about it.

The five 2-hour Zoom training sessions we ran in lieu of the 2022 Joint Conference are now done. They were each recorded, and the videos and powerpoints have been uploaded to the Reference Library. Thanks to the presenters for sharing their time and knowledge, and allowing us to preserve those training sessions like this. Enjoy! Peace. -W

2018 Joint Conference - added to Reference Library

Remember back before the plague? Ahhh, good times. NYSTARS hosted a good conference on pedestrian issues, crash recon, and PRT, with testing, videos, and some great presentations. I have uploaded the presentations as well as a bunch of the other collected peripheral info that came to me from that conference to the Reference Library, in its own "2018 Join Conference" directory. Members can get there from the website. Peace. -W

Google Maps allows a neat visualization of where our 1000 members reside. This map has no personal information, just city, state, country, and should be accessible to anyone interested in seeing how the membership is spread out. Obviously, there are a lot of duplicates in the bigger cities. 900 of us live in the USA, another 100 live in 28 other countries. I love the online reach! Here's to a prosperous 2022 for all of us.
Renewal Date Adjustments

I'm slowly trying to get everyone onto an "end of the month" renewal date. We have been working on a mostly straight "365-day" membership since we got the new website, but that has not worked as well as I had hoped. As renewals come in now, I'm manually resetting each member's next renewal date to an end of month, such that they don't miss any issues of the ARJ. Some folks are getting a few extra weeks, some got trimmed by a week or so. So if your current renewal date doesn't seem to be what you remember, you might be correct. If anyone has an issue with the process or result for their membership, please ping me off list (admin@napars.org) and we'll find some common ground to move forward. Thanks for your patience.

2021 Conference flash drive

I've got a few extra thumbdrives from last month's Joint Conference hosted by MDATAI. They have the presentations, videos of the crashes, data and photos from the testing, vehicle specs from Expert Autostats, and vehicle weights. It's about 9GB of data in all. The extra thumbdrives are now for sale in the NAPARS store (see the tab at the top of the page). Cost is $45, but discounted to $35 for members of any of the 5 groups (but if you're not NAPARS, you'll have to hit me up for the discount). Peace. -W

1,000 NAPARS Members

NAPARS has for several years used variable renewal dates so that everyone gets 6 issues of the Accident Reconstruction Journal when they sign up. This means a new member might only get 10 months of membership, or perhaps 13 months, depending on when they sign up and if they want to get the recent ARJ issue as their first or wait for the next. This constant state of flux means our best metric for measuring membership is the number of ARJs we order. With two late renewals this week, we have ordered our 1,000th copy of the recently released ARJ #185 from Victor Craig, the publisher. Color me satisfied. Peace. -W

2021 Conference is a wrap

The Joint Conference for 2021 is concluded. We finished strong with a great presentation on the crashes by Brad Muir and Greg Russell. The second test with a van holding a ton of sand was like a deadblow hammer, and the highspeed videos show the van getting pushed backwards by the car, but then the sand catches up and stops everything right there. I'll be uploading presentations and videos and test data and Pix4D maps and such to the Reference Library as soon as I get caught up. Probably gonna be a few days. Until next year!

ACTAR has notified us that the conference next month has been approved for up to 21 CEUs. In the "Forewarned is Forearmed" department, This is for anyone who might be planning to sign in to get CEUs, and scoot out for a round of golf or whatever. ACTAR has begun tracking attendance at each session one wishes to get credit for, so actually being in the room EVERY TIME may be necessary to get those CEUs. Don't be surprised if that's the case, eh? Bring your cellphones - signing in by using a cellphone and a scan-code was how it was done at the test-round at IPTM earlier this year.
October Conference is a GO.

The Boards of MDATAI (who is hosting this year) and NAPARS (who is helping) have both voted that the in-person Conference October 6-8 should go forward as planned. The room at the Grand Hotel is ginormous, so spacing should be no problem. We'll have masks and sanitizer on hand and we will be verifying temperatures with non-contact thermometers at the meeting room entrance. Anyone with flu-like symptoms is asked to sit this one out, eh? We will have live crash tests, but we will not be conducting contemporaneous Zoom broadcasts. As in years past, handout material will be uploaded in a few months to the Reference Library, with presenters' permission. We're approaching 100 registered attendees at this point, so it should be a good crowd.

ACTAR TEST: There's an ACTAR test the day before - see ACTAR.ORG for that registration.

ACTAR TEST PREP CLASS: I'll be leading a day of preparation for the test on October 4th at the hotel, with assistance from one or two ACTAR-certified recons - sign up for that at the EVENTS tab.

PART 107 Class: There are 10 attendees already signed up for the Unmanned Aerial System class, you can join them! Sign up in the EVENTS tab for this, too.

Digital ARJ #181 is out and the hardcopy of #180 has arrived

The US Mail system is still recovering from the deluge of the holidays, it seems. The Nov/Dec 2020 issue that went in the mail 2 months ago has finally arrived at my house in NH. The latest issue, Jan/Feb 2021, has gone out to everyone's email already. Hardcopies will be along eventually. Don't hold your breath, though, eh? Peace. -W

ARJ #180 is here. All earlier issues are in the Reference Library.

In dealing with the conference in October, I was delinquent about uploading previous issues to the Reference Library. That is now complete. One hundred and seventy nine ARJ issues for your reading pleasure and edification are there for every member. Please remember that these are copyrighted documents, here for the use of our members. We pay the publisher an annual fee for this benefit to our membership. Please don't be sharing them around or otherwise transgressing his copyright, ok? Thanks. Peace. -Wade, admin.

NAPARS election for Board 2021-2022 is concluded

Our election for the 2021-2022 Board of Directors term has concluded.

We had a total of 144 respondents cast their votes.

The Executive Board members, running unopposed, each win another term:

     PRESIDENT: Tommy Sturdivan (141 votes)

VICE PRESIDENT: Richard "Rick" McAlister (139 votes)

     TREASURER: George Meinschein (138 votes)

Based on the membership makeup at this point, we need Two (2) "Law Enforcement" representatives and Four (4) Private Sector representatives. The six seats will be filled by the 5 incumbents and one new member. Between them, they reflect a total of 4 L/E and 5 P/S backgrounds, so we meet our diversity goal. The board for 2021-2022 will be as follows:

     C. Greg Russell, Law Enforcement and private sector (130 votes)

Hugh Bean, Law Enforcement (121 votes)

Dr. Susan Lantz, private sector(120 votes)

Dr. Rick Wakefield, private sector (105 votes)

Vladimir Bortchevsky, Law Enforcement and private sector (104)

Brian Fowler, Law Enforcement and private sector, new member (95)

We had two additional candidates who did not win a seat this go-round.

Conference Wrap-up

I've finally finished the tallies for the conference, and sent lists to the ACTAR rep for CEU consideration. I have also assembled the attendance lists - over the 7 sessions, we had nearly 500 different people stop by for between one and 7 shows. 144 people will be getting an attendance cert for all 7 shows, sent by email as soon as we can get them assembled. The other 350-ish folks will get a cert for the sessions that they logged in for, or that I can identify as being in the Zoom-room for more than 90 minutes from the Participant Logs. There are some things I'd do differently next time on the administrative end, but I couldn't be happier with the results for our members. The videos of the 6 recorded sessions will be posted in the members-only section shortly. Thanks to the presenters for sharing their time, and the team of guys behind the scenes making it happen! On to next year, when MdATAI will be hosting the Joint Conference.

2020 Virtual Joint Conference - Day 1 is done!

The virtual conference kicked off 10/5 with a two-hour session on motorcycle turning and swerving by yours truly. Zoom worked pretty well, with around 400 attendees. We video-recorded the session, and will eventually get it posted to the website, along with a powerpoint handout. We'll do the same for the 10/6 show on Rollovers by John Daily. Subsequent presentation recording is still up in the air. Check your emails after 10am for the sign-in link, and if you don't see it, write to me at admin@napars.org and we'll figure it out. Better to do that earlier than later, though, ok? Peace. -W

ACTAR has approved 2 CEUs for each one. They will run from 1pm Eastern Time to 3pm. We will have 1,000 available log-in slots, and will send out the URL each morning to members of all the groups. Sorry for the late notice, we're still ironing out the details of ZOOM, ACTAR, speakers, and logistics.
The Lending Library is now open.

I've gone live with the Lending Library, as shown in the Member's Only section. There are currently roughly 5 dozen items, including SAE "Special Publications", STAPP conference proceedings, and a few books. I'll be adding a couple dozen books from my library shortly. The idea here is that NAPARS members can borrow anything for a month for the cost of shipping. If you have a UPS or Fedex account, I can ship it on that, or I can send it by whoever's cheaper at the "mail it" store. Returns are based on the honor system. Contact me at admin@NAPARS.org with any questions or comments. Peace. -W

I have uploaded 20 papers from the 1999 CMRSC XI conference to the Reference Library in the Members Only section of this website. There are a couple with actual test data that might be useful, a staged train/pickup collision, in-line skaters' speed, ABS testing with and without steering input, and some more that might provide some useful background on a particular topic like Road Rage, training, traffic calming, and heavy trucks. Enjoy. Peace. -W

I've sent the first batch of names to the publisher, Victor Craig, so that he can send a copy of ARJ #176 (Mar/Apr 2020) directly to everyone's email. It will be going out in the next few days. I've sent reminders to all those who have fallen off the roster from my personal email address, in hopes that the automated reminders were all shunted to a spam box somewhere. A few members have returned, but there are a couple dozen who are still MIA. Anyone who signs up in the next couple weeks can be backdated to 01 March, and get the current ARJ issue right now, while it's still fresh. Feel free to ping me directly at admin@NAPARS.ORG with any questions. Peace. -Wade, admininstrator

ARJ #174 is out

The last issue of the Accident Reconstruction Journal for 2019 is out. #174 should have arrived at email inboxes already for all current members. If you get the hardcopy, too (which is a separate subscription arranged through Victor Craig, the publisher) it should be arriving soon. We've ordered 810 copies so far, so membership is on the rebound, after years in the doldrums. I'm pretty excited about that. This issue has Victor's Subject Index in it, while the index I am assembling is still in the Reference Library, in Excel. I've added the AIQ listings from Victor's index to mine, and will work on adding full titles and authors for them as time permits. Enjoy! Peace. -W

NAPARS is on Instagram!

In hopes of expanding our audience to more youthful folks who hang out on other platforms besides facebook, I've started an Instagram page here: https://www.instagram.com/napars1/ I'm still trying to figure out how to use that to best advantage. Maybe I should recruit a 20-something to help? Wish me luck. Peace. -Wade, admin.

I'm building the mailing list for the May/June ARJ now. It should be out in just over a week or so. If your membership lapsed after 5/15/2019, and you haven't renewed yet, you're not on that guest list. You can always log in to check your status, or ping me (admin@napars.org) with any questions. Renewal is easy - either online or with an old-fashioned check. We can accommodate either!

New ARJ Index 1989-2019

A fairly complete contents listing for major articles, and many minor ones as well, has been posted in the Reference Library, titled "ARJ Index as of 03APR2019". You can open it in Google's SHEETS software, or save it to your computer and use Excel. Press "<CNTRL> F" for "FIND" to search for keywords of interest. The listing has all cover-listed articles from 1989-2003, and a more comprehensive listing including authors for 2004-2019. It's a work in progress, and I'll update the file as I get more of the early issues added. Peace. -Wade

First 2019 Newsletter is out!

The first "NAPARS News" for 2019 is hot off the presses! I sent it to all NAPARS members last night. For the first time, I've used the email system that's integral to the new website, so it may look a little different, but it is really from NAPARS. The email has a link to the PDF document stored on our website. You can click on the link and read it in your browser, or right click on the link and save the PDF to your computer for future reading. For those of you who wish to print a paper copy, most of it will be fine, but some links will be pretty useless, since they are directing you to a website, which is not yet available in hardcopy. <heh> Anyway, this issue has
-The President's Message
-Wade's Miscellaneous Ramblings column
-Passings & Transitions
-A Blast From The Past (1997 ARJ article on friction testing inverted cars)
Eubanks Pedestrian Reconstruction paper added to Reference Library

With his kind permission, I've added Jerry Eubanks' handout from the 2001 IATAI conference, titled "Pedestrian Accident Investigation/Reconstruction Update." He discusses timing of pedestrian startup at a crosswalk, and acceleration to constant speed, as well as discussing wrap trajectories in some detail. It can be found in the Reference Library, titled "2001 Pedestrian Accident Investigation/Reconstruction Update.pdf"

A dozen motorcycle, trailer, RV papers added to Reference Library

In 1973, the DOT held the Second International Congress on Automotive Safety, with a theme of "Motorcycle and Recreational Vehicle Safety". Included in the conference proceedings are a number of wonderful papers, including a few by Harry Hurt, and the motorcycle obstacle avoidance paper by Watanabe and Yoshida. I've uploaded all the papers I have copies of (12 total). There are also papers that discuss how motorcycles actually turn, the dynamics of motorcycle crashes with video screen captures, trailer handling, Motor home trailer dynamics, and more. The format looks dated, but the physics hasn't changed. Researchers then were working on the same problems we deal with today. Most of these papers are not overly long, and are worth a read. Clearly, I'm scanning a photocopy of a printed book, so they are a little rough. If anyone has cleaner copies they could send, I'll put them in to share instead. To find them quickly, go to the Reference Library link, and search on "DOT". Peace. -Wade, admin.

Scam Email ALERT!

ALERT: Someone has been sending out scam emails claiming to be NAPARS President Tommy Sturdivan, but the reply to address is not a napars.org address. The one I got has a weird "company83394" address, though there are others including "directoratpresidio". An example is shown below. The real one doesn't have the big sign hanging on it, but it doesn't look like something you'd get from Tommy, and it isn't. Nobody at NAPARS will ever ask you to buy debit cards for us. Ever. Don't click any links in such an email, please! If you have any question about a mail's veracity, write directly to Tommy (president@napars.org) or myself (admin@napars.org) for clarification. Peace.
