Dr. Dipl.-Ing. Michael Weyde will spend 2 hours with us discussing the uses of EDR data in crash analysis. He is an internationally-recognized expert in many aspects of crash analysis, but most of the documentation I've found is in German. Go figure, since that's where he's from and lives and works. He brings the European perspective to crash analysis. The physics doesn't change, but how one evaluates crashes might.

This program has been approved for 2 ACTAR CEUs, and participants will be able to request an attendance certificate from NAPARS as well during the event.

Dr. Weyde's discussion outline is as follows:

Data in vehicles and their evaluation

    1. Basics

1.1. What data can be expected in vehicle control units? (Not only Airbag-Control-Module ACM, but also RADAR-, Camera- and Brake-Control-Units)

1.2. How is the data generated?

1.3. How can we access data in Event Data Recorder (EDR)?

    2. Impact-related change of speed (Delta-V)

2.1. What is Delta-V in the EDR of ACM and how is it calculated?

2.2. How accurate are the Delta-V values in EDR?

2.3. How can the Delta-V values be used in accident reconstruction? (Determination of accelerations, impact-related forces and distances traveled during the collision or actually within 250 ms from t0)

    3. Pre-collision speed in the ACM‘s EDR

3.1. How is the "vehicle indicated speed" in the EDR determined?

3.2. What system-related and possible tolerances due to driving dynamics must be taken into account for the indicated speed?

3.3. Practical application for determining the possible upper and lower range of the actual vehicle speed using an EXCEL template
